Not known as a vocal figure, Hall of famer Steve Carlton let his left arm do the talking throughout his impressive career. The offered contract was signed by "Lefty" as an agreement to play in the Puerto Rican circuit during the 1966 off-season. The four-page document was composed for English speaking players and details Carlton's 1966-1967 contract to play for "Ponce Baseball" for the sum of "$700" plus "$300" in living expenses. On the appropriate line, Carlton's blue ballpoint signature (signed “Steven N. Carlton”) resonates ("8-9") strength and clarity. Having split the 1966 campaign between Tulsa (Texas League) and the St. Louis Cardinals, Carlton honed his skills in the Puerto Rican League and proceeded to log 14 triumphs for the 1967 World Series champs.
