This original news service photograph showcases a rare and touching image of Lou Gehrig and his successor, Babe Dahlgren. The "Babe" in this photo, however, appears impressed and honored as the recipient of a firm handshake and genuine grin from his mentor. As the original Associated Press caption adhered to the reverse indicates, the gesture was to congratulate Dahlgren for his home run in the May 2, 1939 22-2 pounding of the Detroit Tigers. The game was the first in which Gehrig sat out after appearing in 2,130 consecutive contests. Measuring 9-1/8 x 7", the photo has wrinkles and modest creases, none of which affect the heart-wrenching central image of a hero not yet aware of his tragic fate.
