The 1910 E93 Standard Caramel series, which was locally released in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is among the most popular of all the candy cards. Sixty percent of the subjects from this colorful series depict players who would eventually be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Having been recently discovered in Northern Virginia, a variant displaying Ty Cobb has been the subject of much interest on respected Internet hobby forums. The origin, history, and distribution of the Cobb version have undergone intensive examination. According to SGC, the offered 1910 E93 Standard Caramel Ty Cobb (Black & White, Blank Back, UNALTERED) example is a unique variation of a charter Class of 1936 member. Judged “Authentic” by the grading service, the assessment was rendered according to the legitimacy of the example, not the grade of the card. The blank reverse displays expected soiling and wear, while the black-and-white obverse concedes moderate abrasions and peripheral chipping, including a minimal portion on Cobb’s uniform and face. The crease-free pose which is shared by the E94 George Close Candy and E98 “Series of 30” designations is otherwise clear with precise registration. Numerous additional flowery adjectives can be ascribed to both the player and the one-of-a-kind variation. However, such fluff is insufficient when detailing the winning combination of renowned player and colorless pose.
